THE HEART OF CATHOLIC CEMETERIES & CREMATORIA
As Rookwood Necropolis was the first cemetery in the Catholic Cemetery Trust, it reflects the history of Sydney, and also charts the development of Catholic funerals, highlighted by the building of the Mausoleum of the Resurrection and Australia’s only Catholic Crematorium.
There is the beautiful tradition of Sydney sandstone architecture and romantic gothic style at St Michael the Archangel Chapel through to the modern Mary Mother of Mercy Chapel.
The grounds are continually renewed with tranquil landscaping and there are contemporary examples of outdoor art, from the incredible granite sculptures of the Way of the Cross to the imposing bronze statue of Blessed Pope John Paul II.
Rookwood Necropolis is the largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere. More than 1 million people have been buried in the 34 hectares since its establishment in 1867. Take the historic tour to find out more about the history and the characters of Rookwood Necropolis.
